Qualifications, experience and age requirements for nominated overseas workers

The requirements for overseas workers vary depending on the visa being sponsored for (the 4-year Skills in Demand (SID) (subclass 482) visa, the 5-year Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (SESR) (subclass 494) visa or the permanent Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) (subclass 186) visa), and the category of occupation.

Occupations have been given a categories (A to P) based on the relevant qualifications and experience requirements that need to be met by an overseas worker to be sponsored in the occupation.

Read carefully the NT DAMA occupations list which provides the relevant category for each occupation.

Please also note the following:

  • All work experience claimed must be relevant to the nominated occupation, at the appropriate skill level for the occupation and undertaken within the last 5 years from the lodgement date.
  • Exemptions may apply where a skills assessment is required for the SID/SESR visas from MigrationNT, see below.
  • A skills assessment is not required in support of ENS visa applications under NT DAMA. However, the Department of Home Affairs may request a skills assessment at their discretion during visa processing.

SID requirement

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • hold a relevant qualification equivalent to an AQF bachelor’s degree or higher and one year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) work experience
  • where ANZSCO allows work experience to substitute for qualifications, have at least 5 years of relevant full-time (or part-time equivalent) work experience. This can be determined by searching for the occupation on the ANZSCO website.

SESR requirement

Applicants must:

  • be under 55 years of age
  • obtain a skills assessment from the relevant authority specified on the Australian Government's Department of Home Affairs website
  • meet one of the following:
    • hold a relevant qualification equivalent to an AQF bachelor’s degree or higher and 2 years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) work experience
    • where the ANZSCO allows work experience to substitute for qualifications, have at least 5 years of relevant full-time (or part-time equivalent) work experience. This can be determined by searching for the occupation on the ANZSCO website.

ENS requirement

Applicants must:

  • be under 55 years of age
  • worked for 2 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) ) within the 3 years immediately before nomination in the NT in the nominated occupation or a closely related occupation at the same skill level
  • meet one of the following:
    • hold a relevant qualification equivalent to an AQF bachelor’s degree or higher
    • where the ANZSCO allows work experience to substitute for qualifications, have at least 5 years of relevant full-time (or part-time equivalent) work experience. This can be determined by searching for the occupation on the ANZSCO website. This work experience can be concurrent with (i.e. not in addition to) the 2 years’ full-time experience in the NT as per above.

SID requirement

Holders of certain passports may require a mandatory skills assessment from Trades Recognition Australia.   • have at least 2 years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) work experience
  • meet one of the following:
    • hold a relevant qualification equivalent to an AQF Certificate I
    • completed compulsory secondary education
    • completed relevant on the job-training (where the ANZSCO allows to substitute for qualifications). This can be determined by searching for the occupation on the ANZSCO website.

ENS requirement

Applicants must:

  • be under 50 years of age
  • worked for 2 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) within the 3 years immediately before nomination in the NT in the nominated occupation or a closely related occupation at the same skill level
  • meet one of the following:
    • hold a relevant qualification equivalent to an AQF Certificate I
    • completed compulsory secondary education
    • completed relevant on the job-training (where the ANZSCO allows to substitute for qualifications). This can be determined by searching for the occupation on the ANZSCO website.

  • have been assessed and verified by a MINTRAC registered assessor, or an assessor approved by the Commonwealth, with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment experienced in meat processing
  • have at least one year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) work experience
  • meet one of the following:
    • hold a relevant qualification equivalent to an AQF Certificate I
    • completed compulsory secondary education
    • completed relevant on the job-training (where the ANZSCO allows to substitute for qualifications). This can be determined by searching for the occupation on the ANZSCO website.

SESR requirement

Applicants must:

  • be under 55 years of age (skill level 4 occupations) or under 50 years of age (skill level 5 occupations)
  • have been assessed and verified by a MINTRAC registered assessor, or an assessor approved by the Commonwealth, with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment experienced in meat processing
  • have at least 2 years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) work experience
  • meet one of the following:
    • hold a relevant qualification equivalent to an AQF Certificate I
    • completed compulsory secondary education
    • completed relevant on the job-training (where the ANZSCO allows to substitute for qualifications). This can be determined by searching for the occupation on the ANZSCO website.

ENS requirement

Applicants must:

  • be under 55 years of age (skill level 4 occupations) or under 50 years of age (skill level 5 occupations)
  • have been assessed and verified by a MINTRAC registered assessor, or an assessor approved by the Commonwealth, with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment experienced in meat processing
  • worked for 2 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) within the 3 years immediately before nomination in the NT in the nominated occupation or a closely related occupation at the same skill level
  • meet one of the following:
    • hold a relevant qualification equivalent to an AQF Certificate I
    • completed compulsory secondary education
    • completed relevant on the job-training (where the ANZSCO allows to substitute for qualifications). This can be determined by searching for the occupation on the ANZSCO website.

Exemptions for SID/SESR skills assessment

A skills assessment is not required for a SID/SESR application where MigrationNT is the assessing body under NT DAMA if any of the following apply:

  • at the time of application for the visa, the overseas worker held a subclass 457 or subclass 482 visa for the nominated occupation, and the person satisfied the primary criteria for the grant of that visa, and the person is employed in Australia in the nominated occupation to which the application relates
  • the overseas worker holds a relevant qualification for the nominated occupation to which the application relates that is commensurate with the qualification specified for the occupation in ANZSCO and the qualification was obtained as a result of the successful completion of a course of study or training in Australia
  • the nominated occupation to which the application relates requires the applicant to hold a licence, registration or membership to perform the occupation and the person has been granted that licence, registration or membership.
