The economic contribution of the waste management and secondary resources industry to the Northern Territory economy
The Northern Territory's waste management and secondary resources industry is an important contributor to the economy providing infrastructure and services to the community in the collection, processing, recycling and disposal of waste.
In 2017-18 around 517,800 tonnes of waste was collected, processed, recycled and disposed of, of that number 34% was recovered and diverted from landfill disposal.
Over the past 10 year the industry has grown with employment increasing by 14.5% with the industry’s value add in current prices growing by 77.7%.
This report, which was commissioned by Waste Recycling Industry NT and co-funded by the Department of Trade, Business and Asian Relations, found the industry contributed $97 million towards the Northern Territory gross state product through direct and flow-on activity.
