Private Security Act 1995 review opens for public consultation

Published

The Northern Territory Government is undertaking a review of the Private Security Act 1995 to ensure the Territory’s regulatory framework continues to meet the needs of industry and the community.

The private security sector has evolved significantly since the Act was introduced more than 30 years ago. Security personnel now play a broader role across the Territory, including supporting safety in public spaces and delivering community patrol services.

The review will consider a range of areas to ensure the legislation remains contemporary and effective, including:

  • simplifying and modernising licensing categories
  • strengthening training and competency standards
  • improving codes of practice and compliance obligations for security providers.

A key focus of the review is achieving the right balance between maintaining appropriate regulatory oversight and supporting a flexible, capable industry.

Consultation with stakeholders will inform the review, with feedback requested from private security providers, businesses and the wider community.

Feedback will help guide reforms aimed at supporting a professional, accountable and well‑regulated private security sector in the Northern Territory.

Consultation is open until Friday 17 April 2026.
