Future bright for Barkly business

Published

Max and Liza Wilson are full of confidence in the future of Tennant Creek – the town they “adopted” because they saw it as a land of opportunity.

The couple moved from Darwin to Tennant and set up Wilson Diesel in 2022.

They haven’t looked back.

“The future is bright for the Barkly,” Max says.

Wilson Diesel’s core business is heavy diesel mechanical, both workshop and field service, and is a NT Fleet provider.

The business employs 17 full-time staff, including an apprentice.

About 75 percent of the company’s work comes from the mining industry.

Tennant is enjoying a big upsurge in mining and exploration, which has given small local businesses the chance to tender for lucrative contracts.

“Mining is improving business in Tennant in many ways,” says Max. “It’s putting the town on the map, pumping millions of dollars into local businesses and upskilling the local workforce.

“The Northern Territory has not seen a mining boom like this in decades.”

Max wants Barkly businesses to be “put first” in all NT Government and private procurements to help build local business and enable it to support the mining industry.

He used to carry out diesel mechanical work during his down time as a fly in, fly out worker in the mining industry.

Max recognised a “massive gap” in the Tennant market when he went to the town from Darwin to replace an engine for Remote Concrete.

“Moving my family to Tennant Creek meant I could escape FIFO and be home to see my family every day.”

Not surprisingly, Max and Liza were nervous about going into business on their own.

“Turns out there is a big difference between being good at your trade versus business. Moving your life from Darwin to a small town and starting a new business has seen a lot of challenges.

“Despite this, our business is growing and we’re very confident about the future.”
