Study confirms potential of NT Sustainable Aviation Fuel industry
A feasibility study undertaken by Ernst & Young has identified the Northern Territory’s potential to become a leader in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development.
SAF is a biofuel used to power aircraft that is designed to be more environmentally friendly than conventional jet fuel. SAF can also be blended with conventional jet fuel and used in existing aircraft engines without modification, offering a potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
The study investigated the SAF market and opportunities for the Territory to leverage its abundant natural resources and strategic proximity to Southeast Asian markets to competitively participate in this growing global industry.
The study highlights SAF technologies related to biofuels and hydrogen currently represent the most feasible pathways in the Territory.
Importantly the study identified the Territory has the potential to develop a SAF industry noting external considerations such as global demand, export potential, feedstock availability and technological readiness could impact viability.
The release of the study confirms the Northern Territory Government’s interest in exploring low carbon liquid fuel (including SAF) opportunities with potential proponents and investors; promising a solution for local industry development that supports emission reduction targets.
