SBC support a 'slam dunk' for business success
Shaun Edwards knew where to go when he needed help getting his unusual business off the ground - a small business champion.
The Territory Government has a team of champions helping business throughout the Territory.
They don’t give advice on how to run a company, but provide crucial information on where business people can go to get help.
Mr Edwards says his small business champion, Robyn Secrett, is an ‘absolute legend’.
He says she was crucial in explaining where he could get help.
“Robyn made it so easy to understand.”
Mr Edwards owns House of Darwin, a social enterprise that sells quirky clothing and other accessories and reinvests the profits back into social programs in remote Indigenous communities.
He says the aim is to ‘inspire, educate and cultivate change’ in the 2 worlds of Australia - Indigenous and non-Indigenous.
His fashion and lifestyle label was launched in 2020.
Mr Edwards uses the profits to support a range of community programs, such as AFL workshops in East Arnhem Land; skateboarding workshops on the Tiwi Islands, Goulburn Island and Daly River; and Hoop Dreams, which helps refurbish basketball courts, including colourful murals.
He has a store in Darwin and hopes to open stores in Melbourne and Sydney, then Los Angeles and Japan.
His label was part of the final show at Australian Fashion Week 2023.
House of Darwin has created banners for the Dreamtime at the G football match and designed hoodies for the Michael Long Foundation.
Mr Edwards has collaborated with brands such as Dickies, Afends and Wah Wah Australia, and his goods are available in Universal Store outlets throughout Australia.
