Delivering skilled workers for Territory businesses and community

The Northern Territory Government in partnership with the Australian Government announced an extension to the existing NT Designated Area Migration Agreement, benefitting employers across the Territory.

The one year extension to the Agreement will:

  • deliver simpler and more streamlined pathway to permanent residency
  • improve concessions to the salary threshold (now $55,000) to better align the salary provisions for overseas workers with their Australian counterparts
  • add 11 new critical occupations, providing Territory employers access to 135 occupations in shortage
  • provide up to 625 temporary skilled visas for new workers.

The agreement includes much needed occupations like teachers, nurses, software engineers and prison officers, and makes it easier for employers to access the program, while expanding pathways to permanent residency for workers and their families.

The Australian and Northern Territory Governments understand the importance of ensuring migrant workers are safe at work and are afforded proper pay and conditions. Employers accessing the program will be required to demonstrate that sponsored overseas workers are provided the same salary entitlements as their Australian counterparts.

Both governments look forward to working in a tripartite manner with businesses and unions as the third NT DAMA is negotiated in 2024 to begin in 2025.
