Dynamic business sparks local opportunities
Alice Springs-born Troy Lawton admits he was “heading down the wrong path” as a teenager.
“As a young Indigenous man, it felt like all I could do was try to be a professional athlete or get into mischief,” he said.
“One seemed more attainable than the other.”
The Bidjara man was brought back from the brink by his stepfather.
“I was introduced to the world of trades and was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to start an electrical apprenticeship in his company.
“From there I truly found my passion with electrical solar systems.
This pushed me to learn as much as I could and become accredited, and soon I was running my own solar projects and bringing in work myself,” he said.
“I became an electrical contractor. My passion grew and I came to realise that I wanted to create my own legacy and to start a company.
“I could hand young Indigenous people the same opportunities I was given. I think it’s important to show our younger community that there are many options to be successful and they don’t always require you to attend university or make it as a professional athlete.”
Troy owns Dynamic Solutions NT, which offers residential and commercial electrical installations and maintenance, solar and solar battery installation, and advice to small to medium-sized construction projects in Alice Springs and remote.
“Much of our work is remote and we aim to help improve people’s lives in remote communities.”
He accessed a Territory Government grant under the Aboriginal Business Development Program to upskill himself with additional certificates, and buy a trailer and additional power tools.
“The grant was extremely useful and I am extremely grateful that I had the opportunity to receive it,” he said.
“It aided my business to be able to grow without the enormous financial stress purchasing those things out of my personal family savings would have caused.
“Applying for the grant was extremely straightforward and I was lucky to receive additional support from my small business champion, who guided me through the process.”
