Rules for drones
To fly and use a drone, you must follow certain safety rules as well as other rules that are specific to its location.
Safety rules
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is responsible for all safety regulations relating to the operation of drones.
They have implemented a regulatory framework that enhances safety and accountability while also supporting sustainable development.
For more information on the rules including registration, licensing and legal requirements, go to the CASA website.
You can also go to the CASA website to report drone operations you think have broken the rules.
Other rules
The Australian Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (DITRDCA) is responsible for regulating drone noise.
All other rules for privacy, environment and cultural sites are the responsibility of local, state and territory governments.
In the NT, this includes:
- drones in schools policy – on the NT Department of Education and Training website
- rules for flying drones in parks including permits when required – on the NT Government website.
For more information about non-safety rules, go to the DITRDCA website.
You can also go to the DITRDCA website to report drone concerns related to privacy, noise and environmental issues.
